Goodbye Badge
Perhaps the highest profile Australian player in the world recently announced he will be leaving Australian rugby behind for admirable reasons. Nick Cummins (The Honey Badger) released a statement telling his fans that due to illnesses within his large family, he is taking greater responsibility for their healthcare and therefore needs a bigger income than he has been able to find in Australian Rugby. He will therefore be moving to Japan after the end of this SuperRugby season with Western Force.
This would not be as much of a blow to Australian Rugby if it wasn’t for the fact the ARU do not allow players on the national side who do not play for Australian clubs. Sadly meaning Nick will not be playing the Rugby World Cup next year in England. And this is no small blow to the team. From his 15 caps for the Wallabies, Nick has scored 6 tries and has helped his national team win 11 times.
There has been much controversy about this rule recently with rumours that their could be a large exodus of australian rugby talent post RWC 2015 if nothing changes. However, this will not be last the we see of The Honey Badger but to say farewell for now from World Rugby, we’ve put together some of our favourite Honey Badger Quotes.
What do you think of the ARU’s eligibility rule? Is it hampering players prospects or ensuring the safety of domestic australian clubs? Tell us below in the comment section.
