Autumn International Tests – Disciplinary updates

The IRB have cited two players after the first weekend of Autumn International Tests.

Rob Simmons of Australia luckily avoided being sent off after a crunching late ‘tip’ tackle on France’s Yannick Nyanga. Simmons caught a break because none of the match officials saw the number of the offending player so he couldn’t be sent off.

On Sunday, Adam Thomson of New Zealand All Blacks was binned for ‘stamping or trampling’ Alasdair Strokosh of Scotland. A ban for Thomson could in theory end his All Blacks career on a downer; he’s widely expected to move to Japan and a ban resulting from this incident would most likely rule him out of the rest of these Autumn tests.

Super 15 Rugby introduces ‘White card’

With the Super 15 tournament days away from kicking off for the new season, the planned introduction of a new ‘white card’ to the referee is making the news today.

The new card, being trialled in the Super 15 Tournament, is an addition to the referees existing arsenal of yellow and red. The white card allows a ref to put a player ‘on report’ if he suspects foul play, but has been unable to identify the culprit.

The game continues as normal during which time a citing commissionaire scans the game footage to pinpoint any guilty party.

Once identified, the commissionaire reports back to the referee who can take the appropriate action.

The hope of new card system is to identify and eliminate offences quicker and give greater consistency in decision making.

Greg Peters, chairman of SANZAR (who run the Tournament) said:

The card is available to a referee when he thinks something may have happened but hasn’t been able to get a good look at what might have happened or who may have done it

Chris Robshaw to captain England

The RFU announced yesterday that Chris Robshaw will captain England for the rest of the RBS 6 Nations.

Chris Robshaw with the Calcutta Cup 2012

They’re obviously pleased with his work against Scotland and Italy and have made the official announcement that he’ll keep the skippers role for the rest of the Tournament.

Head Coach, Stuart Lancaster, had this to say about the decision:

Chris has stepped into the role well and led a new team in two tough away fixtures. He is one of many leaders we could have chosen against Scotland and Italy but he has shown on and off the field the qualities required to captain a side. We feel it is right to make a call now that Chris will lead England for the rest of the RBS 6 Nations.

Robshaw, obviously delighted with the decision, said:

Captaining the team against Scotland was the proudest day of my life and to get the chance again against Italy was fantastic. To do so at Twickenham would be something else and I’m thankful to the coaches for giving me that opportunity and to all the lads for helping me over the last few weeks. For now I’m just focusing on training hard and helping us get ready to play a strong Welsh team.

It’ll be interesting to see how he measures up at Twickenham on the 25th when England face Wales. It should be a tough test for both the captain and the new England squad.

France vs Ireland match rescheduled for 4th March

RBS 6 Nations have announced that the France vs Ireland match, which was postponed at the weekend due to an unsafe frozen pitch, has been rescheduled for Sunday 4th March.

The have also announced that French and Irish fans who cannot make this new date will receive a full refund for their match tickets.

We can’t help but feel sorry for all those fans that made the trip to France only to find out at the last minute it was cancelled, but player safety is the primary concern. It’s understandable, but it would have been better planning if they made the decision sooner.

Read on for the full press release which explains how you can get a refund on your tickets.

Both Huw Bennett and Ryan Jones  picked up injuries in their victory over Scotland – both players are getting physio and rehab and again aim to be back training next week.

Sam Warburton’s thigh injury ruled him out of the Scotland clash at the last minute, but he too is expected to be back training next week.
